1. Thermal effects
Ultrasound ablation is a state-of-the-art non-invasive therapy, which can treat human diseases but avoiding surgery. A focused ultrasound beam can be directed into the tissue through a focusing lens and at the focal point the temperature may increase to 65 degree centigrade in 3-5 seconds. Under this temperature the tissue can be cooked and become coagulative necrosis. The principle is similar to using magnifying glass to focalize sun shines.
2. Cavitation effects
Cavitation effect a unique physical phenomenon caused by high intensity ultrasound in the liquid, which means tiny air bubbles presenting in the liquid ( cavitation bubbles ) have been activated under ultrasonic wave accompanying with the performance of the shock, expansion, contraction, crashes and a series of dynamic processes. Cavitation effect can make the tumor cell into pieces directly, and then the tumor lost its proliferation, invasion and metastasis ability.
3. Mechanical effects
Ultrasonic mechanical vibrations can damage cell membranes, damage to the membrane structure of an instant high temperature, the membrane structure of highly reactive groups, and interact with other components within the organization chemical reaction induced cell damage in the target area.
4. Immune effects
Preliminary study found that , HIFU treatment of osteosarcoma , the increased activity of the immune cells , which control tumor growth, kill tumor cells circulating in the blood , prevent and reduce hematogenous an important role.
5. Cooperation with radiotherapy and chemotherapy synergy
Hypoxic tumor cells and the center of the tumor cells in S phase is not sensitive to radiation , and ultrasound hyperthermia on hypoxic cells and tumor cells in S phase sensitive, so HIFU can be used in combination with radiotherapy synergy .
In chemotherapy, HIFU can improve drug concentration in cancer cells and can promote tumor cells into the cell cycle, conducive, and helps chemotherapy drugs work well.
6. Selective effect on the large vessels
HIFU treatment area can make the small blood vessels within the tumor tissue coagulation necrosis, while the surrounding larger vessels won’t get any damage, and its targeting and security are very good. The uses of HIFU differences in vascular damage that can completely cover the treatment of tumors effectively protect the adjacent large blood vessels, improve safety of the treatment.
HIFU treatment advantages for malignant bone tumors
a. No surgical incision, no bleeding, reducing tumor spread and transfer possibility;
b. HIFU treatment can keep the original shape and continuity of the bone, with the full use of inactivated tumor bone segment reconstruction;
c. Real-time monitoring feedback, assess the efficacy;
d. Can be treated repeatedly;
e. The treatment process is less painful, no damage to normal tissue, easily accepted by patients
